In our last inspection, we were delighted that OFSTED recognised that many pupils’ experience of NWKAPS was transformational ‘due to the exceptional quality of the school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development.’
We were judged good or outstanding in all categories. Our inspectors commenting on our extensive range of vocational courses which encourage our pupils to consider a variety of career paths in the future, they also recognised that leaders shape the curriculum to ensure that bespoke, suitable pathways are created.
The inspectors were particularly complimentary of our knowledgeable SEND team; the speed and accuracy of their identification of needs and appropriate strategies applied.
Following inspection, we are continuing to provide high-quality support for teacher training at our school. 498 training courses were taken by staff last year, including Level 7 NASENCO course, NPQSL and NPQH, and funding five teachers to gain qualified teacher status.
This year we have implemented a school-wide lesson structure based on highest-impact teaching techniques and strategies, instructional coaching and a year-long CPD cycle with an iterative, cyclical structure focused around the learning challenges that students face, based on evidence from assessment and student work.
Teachers are using retrieval practice and formative assessment to build pupils’ long-term learning, inform next steps and ensure pupils have reached learning goals before they progress through the curriculum. And in every subject, a carefully sequenced curriculum ensures topics build on previous learning.
Students are being actively engaged in reading both for learning and pleasure to improve outcomes across all subjects. Books are now an active part of all classrooms, and we have introduced reading lessons and joined up reading support as part of our Team Around the Child.
